Waiotapu

The Wai-O-Tapu thermal area is part of a scenic reserve covering about 18 sq kilometres and has the largest area of surface thermal activity of any system within the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Formed approximately 160,000 years ago, it is covered with collapsed craters, cold and boiling pools of mud, water and steaming fumaroles.
